Pre-anaesthetic Blood Tests

We appreciate that some animals which require surgery may be getting on in years or may have exhibited signs or organ dysfunction in the past (such as liver or kidney problems). We are happy to be able to offer in-house pre-anaesthetic blood tests for any pet that we feel fits this profile (for example dogs over the age of eight to ten years depending on the breed and cats over the age of ten) or, on your request if you are worried advise on the most appropriate set of tests for your pet. There is an additional charge for any blood test performed.

We will always tell you if we are going to carry out a blood test and aim to keep you informed of the costs involved. This will usually have been discussed in a previous appointment but sometimes we may need to contact you to confirm your consent for the procedure. If your pet has had such a blood test he or she may have a small patch of clipped hair on the neck or a leg.

We will have the results within half an hour of obtaining a blood sample so we usually run the tests on the morning of the procedure as we can then tailor our sedation and anaesthetic protocol according to the results. We will contact you as soon as we are able if they show any increased risk for the procedure to be carried out, we may recommend fluid therapy throughout the surgery or that it may be postponed to a later date if we seek to improve your pets condition prior to an anaesthetic.
